Top tips for getting a good suntan safely
There are many reasons why we enjoy spending time in the sun. In the UK we rarely get the opportunity to wear our shorts and summer dresses. The warm glow of sunshine feels nice on the skin, plus sunlight boosts our serotonin levels. In addition, Vitamin D is the skin, hair, nails, teeth, and bones. Not to mention, we love a good natural tan.
That said, it is important to take precautions when spending time in the sun as there are risks involved.

Here are our top tips to get a sun tan safely and effectively.
Sunscreen
Using the correct sunscreen is important!! Look at the SPF, as well as the term 'broad spectrum' on the bottle, and the SPF star rating.

Determine your tanning time
After a certain amount of time in the sun, your skin stops producing any more melanin (this is the pigment that makes you tan). Basically, spending 7 hours in the sun won't make you any more tanned than sunbathing for 4 hours. For most people it is 2-3 hours, less for people with fair skin.
.
Take breaks
Taking regular breaks in the shade will reduce your risk of burning whilst promoting a healthier, longer-lasting tan.
.
Try beta-caretone supplements
Beta-caretone supplements improve your skin's ability to tan, which in turn boosts your skin's natural defences against UV rays. This does not mean that you can use less sunscreen.
.
Hydrate your skin
Use a moisturising after sun lotion to soothe sunburn and reduce irritation. As a bonus, your tan will last longer if your skin is hydrated.

So grab your sunscreen and start tanning safely!
