A Review of The Sirtfood Diet
A Review of The Sirtfood Diet
The Sirtfood diet is THE diet of 2016. Not sure what it is? Read our blog post to find out what exactly is it.
Certain foods, known as 'sirtfoods' have been shown to activate specific proteins in the body known as sirtuins. Sirtuins influence the body's ability to burn fat and boost metabolism, in the same way that exercise or fasting does. So eating sirtfoods causes your body to burn fat with minimal effort from yourself.
The diet has two phases. Phase one lasts for one week. On days 1-3 dieters consume three green juices and one sirtfood rich meal, restricting overall calorie intake to 1000 per day. On days 4-7 dieters consume two juices and two sirtfood rich meals, following a specific meal plan, restricting calories to 1500 per day.
Phase two involves following a meal plan of three sirtfood meals and one juice per day. This phase lasts for two weeks and steady weight loss should still occur.
The idea of the diet is that once phase two is complete, dieters can eat their usual diet but with a few extra inclusions or substitutes to include more sirtfoods.
So here's my experience of the diet...
I read several online reviews where dieters claimed they did not get hungry. THEY WERE LYING. Days 1-3 were so hard, consuming nothing but juice and green tea until my evening meal. Day 3 was the hardest thing ever as I felt quite lethargic due to lack of calorie intake.
Another thing dieters have stated is that they enjoyed the juices and meals. The juices taste of celery. I can bear them but I have not enjoyed them. Don't worry, it gets easier as you get used to them.
As for the meals, I have mixed feelings. I enjoyed parts of the meals, for example the miso cod was delicious and the cauliflower cous cous has changed my life. But you also have to eat buckwheat. Have you ever tried buckwheat? Don't, it's vile. I am not a picky eater but even after starving myself for most of the day I couldn't force myself to eat all of my buckwheat, leaving me still hungry some days. Some dieters reported being so full they couldn't finish their meals. Again, I think this was a lie- they weren't full and simply didn't want to eat buckwheat.
After week one it gets easier, despite the fact that three meals and one juice per day means spending most of your free time in the kitchen. I felt that I could be a little more flexible, alternate the buckwheat for something else, cook the meals my way. And now as I approach the end of week two I am starting to enjoy the diet more. I'm embracing the fact that it is a diet of inclusion not exclusion, and I don't have to completely avoid any particular food.
So did it work?
Well I am pleased to say that at the end of one grueling week I had lost five pounds. I also usually exercise but only went to the gym once in this time due to lack of energy. Week two has seen me keep the weight off but not lose any more, however I have been quite flexible with the diet. I also feel like it's a diet I can keep up long term, and that I could always repeat week one in the hope of losing another five pounds. However, I'm not 100% convinced that the weight loss was due to sirtfoods and not sheer starvation- I'm sure I was consuming around 500 calories per day on days 1-3.
The main purpose of the diet is also to improve overall wellbeing. I have to say I find that I have more energy and don't feel the need to consume quite so much caffeine during the day.
